Our Journey Begins

So how did we get here? Well, it’s been quite a journey. When I found out that I was pregnant I was so excited and overjoyed. Then when I found out I was having twins I was even more excited. I had always wanted to have twins, a boy and a girl and that was exactly what I was having!

I had a difficult pregnancy. I ended up being on bed rest for five months due to complications with my blood pressure. Additionally, early on in the pregnancy there were concerns about my daughter’s size. She was considerably smaller than her twin brother, but that was all that we knew. I wasn’t terribly concerned, but I knew whatever it was I would be able to deal with it.

Two weeks before I delivered my twins, I went in for an ultrasound. Everything went fine until I tried to walk out of the office. As I was walking out of the door I passed out and fell to the ground. As I tried to get up I was rushed by office staff and nurses. I was loaded into a wheelchair and taken over to the hospital where I stayed for two weeks until my doctor decided that it was time to deliver. I was wheeled down to the OR and my twins were born at 10:00 am and 10:03 am April 2, 2016. My son was born first and my daughter was second.

My twins were delivered via cesarean. My son was born first and my daughter followed. They brought my son to me immediately after cleaning him up. After my daughter was born, they cleaned her up and then began examining her. A nurse came over to me and started to tell me about some of her abnormalities. She began, “Your daughter has six fingers on one hand, four nipples, a smaller head..” I cut her off, and said “Is she breathing?” The nurse assured me that she was, so my request was simply to see her.

I didn’t care about any of the abnormalities, those were a part of who she was. I was just so grateful that both of my twins were alive and doing well. I was allowed to go back to the recovery room with both of my twins on my chest. I was very sleepy afterward so I put the twins in their bassinets, when I woke up my daughter was gone. She had been moved to the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit). My son was still in the nursery. I had him brought down to the room and spent a few moments with him before I was sleepy again.

By the morning, both of my twins were in the NICU. I got myself up and was wheeled down to the NICU to see my babies. Both of my twins were stable to doing relatively well for being in the NICU. I wasn’t sure what was going to happen next, but at that moment I was content, I knew that it would all start to fall into place. We would learn more about what was going on with my twins and develop a plan.

So that’s how it all began for us. Eight years later and we are still learning, still growing and still figuring it out. I’d love to hear your story. Leave me a comment below with any questions or comments. Feel free to reach out to me via email as well.
